This may sound like an obvious step but it’s surprising how many people just want to buy a new car, and don’t really stop to think about what kind of car they want. Or, they know what kind of car they want, but they haven’t given any thought as to whether that car will suit their needs.

Therefore, taking the time to determine what kind of car you want, and what kind of car you need is a crucial step. You don’t want to research one kind of car only to find out that car isn’t going to work for you at all, and you need to start back at square one.

You also need to have an idea of what kind of car you’re going to buy so that you can accurately set your budget. If you plan your budget based on a family-sized sedan and end up buying a sports car or an expensive SUV that your budget can’t handle, you’ll not only be disappointed with your lack of planning, you might also have to give your new car back, because you can’t afford it.

So, you need to know what you want and what you need out of your new car. Here are a few things to think about when considering what type of new car will be exactly what you want it to be:
Do you often need to haul around heavy equipment? A bigger SUV or a pick-up truck might be best for you.
Does your new car need to accommodate your entire family, or do you carpool to kids’ activities or school? An SUV or a minivan might be what you need!

Do you live in an area with lots of back roads, or do you like to take your car off-road when you go up to the cabin? A vehicle with four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive is a must.

Do you use the car often for long distance trips, or just occasionally for short trips around the town? This will make a difference in whether you get a car that has exceptionally good gas mileage, such as a hybrid, or whether you can leave that requirement off your wish list. A car that doesn’t get as good as mileage as another will often be cheaper than one that does especially expensive cars such as a hybrid.

These are just a few of the major requirements that you must think about when trying to decide what you want and need out of your new car. In addition to these things, you’ll probably also want to consider what kind of upgrades you want, such as air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, or other options. But, knowing at least what type of cars you need to be looking at will give you a good starting point in finding the car that’s right for you. This doesn’t mean that you need to know the exact make, model, and year of the car you want – yet. But it does mean that you have a stepping stone for laying out your budget, and knowing what you want, and getting closer to your next new car.
